Early Memories

Without a lie, Aunt Helen has always been My Favourite Aunt. She got that title almost 70 years ago even before I started school. When I was 4 or 5 years old, I would stay with Aunt Helen and Uncle Bruce for a few days in May or June at the time when they grew tobacco near Burford. There were neighbour kids nearby that went to school and I would skip up the road to play when they got home. Many times I rode the tractor on Uncle Bruce's knee when he worked the fields. Our family didn't have a tractor so being on one was new and exciting. Aunt Helen baked delicious cookies for an afternoon treat and I remembered we coloured and she read books to me when her work was done. The best part was going to bed later than I did at home. Aunt Helen became like my second mother. Even when they moved closer to my family and she got her own family, I would bike to visit her. She was often weeding her flower garden at the back of the house or mending kids clothes. She was the kindest, genuine person and always welcomed my visits. I am sad that she is gone but glad that she had a wonderful long life. I will miss her. Carol M.
